Seacoast musician and WUNH radio show host Carol Coronis has been firing up audiences with her energetic delivery of music in the Balkan/Middle Eastern, Celtic, rock, and American roots genres for over a decade now.
Nominated for a 2014 Spotlight Award in Best Roots category, her debut cd girl from thessaly is a collection of thirteen traditional and original songs with roots in Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, Arabia, and a bit of Ireland. Armed with Carol’s citterns and soul-evoking vocals, there are drums, bass, and a visit from a fiddle and an accordion melding to bring this music to a heart-thumping crescendo.
“Somehow all these years later I feel a powerful draw to my roots and the music I heard as a child at home and at the festivals where my dad played bouzouki and guitar in his Greek-American band. The ten years my brother Chuck and I were part of his band during high school and college were resurrected when we played a set at the Portsmouth Music Hall back in 2003 as part of a community presentation featuring Portsmouth’s musical heritage. Now I’m hearing and feeling the music with the new perspective of time and experience.”
Whether performing solo, as a duo or with her band, this wild woman will take you on a journey from Appalachian/Roots to Rock, to the Celtic countries, and to Greece and the Middle East with an edgy kick to the old-world music of Anatolia and the Aegean. From the familiar syrtos to the karsilima and zeibekiko dances in 9/8 time and the asymmetrical time signatures of the kalamatianos dance in 7/8 time, the pulsing beats will have you reaching for your zils and finding your hidden tsifteteli!
Besides performing at festivals, restaurants and bars, Carol and the band are available for weddings, private parties, corporate functions, St. Paddy’s Day events, and workshops.
